Position: Fleet Manager/Mechanic
Overview:
The Fleet Manager/Mechanic is responsible for overseeing the maintenance and repair of a company's vehicle fleet. This role involves managing all equipment repairs and maintenance, scheduling and performing maintenance, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and keeping detailed records of vehicle performance and repairs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Fleet Management:
- Oversee the daily operations of the fleet, including vehicle allocation, routing, and scheduling.
- Maintain detailed records of vehicle use, maintenance schedules, and repairs.
- Develop and implement strategies for efficient fleet utilization to minimize costs and maximize productivity.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations regarding vehicle operation and maintenance.
- Maintenance and Repair:
- Conduct regular inspections of vehicles to identify and address maintenance needs.
- Diagnose mechanical issues and perform repairs as needed.
- Oversee preventive maintenance programs to ensure vehicles are in optimal operating condition.
- Manage and coordinate with external repair vendors when necessary.
- Team Management:
- Supervise and train a team of mechanics and technicians.
- Assign tasks and monitor the performance of the maintenance team.
- Ensure that all work is performed in a safe and efficient manner.
- Inventory Management:
- Maintain an inventory of spare parts, tools, and equipment necessary for vehicle maintenance and repairs.
- Order new parts and supplies as needed, ensuring cost-effectiveness and timely availability.
- Budget Management:
- Develop and manage the fleet maintenance budget.
- Track and report on maintenance costs, identifying areas for potential savings.
- Negotiate contracts and service agreements with suppliers and vendors.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Ensure that all vehicles meet safety and environmental standards.
- Implement and enforce safety protocols for vehicle operation and maintenance.
- Keep up-to-date with industry regulations and best practices.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or associate's degree in automotive technology or a related field preferred.
- Proven experience as a mechanic or in a similar role.
- Strong knowledge of vehicle systems and components, including engines, transmissions, brakes, and electrical systems.
- Familiarity with diagnostic tools and equipment.
- Excellent organizational and leadership skills.
- Ability to manage a budget and make cost-effective decisions.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work well with a team.
- Valid driver's license; CDL may be required depending on the fleet.
Working Conditions:
- Full-time position; may require evening or weekend hours.
- Work is performed in a garage or workshop environment.
- Physical demands include lifting heavy parts, standing for long periods, and working in various weather conditions.
Reporting:
- Reports to the Operations Manager or Director of Transportation.
